New project: This GoFundMe Does Not Exist
An AI trained on GoFundMe pages generates a new one on every refresh
With Mike and Chris, I created This GoFundMe Does Not Exist, a machine learning-trained generator of fake GoFundMes (or is it “GoFundsMe?”), trained on thousands and thousands of stories from the popular crowdfunding site.
As per the description on the site:
With medical costs skyrocketing, people are increasingly resorting to GoFundMe to pay for care their health insurance won't cover. Today, over one third of the fundraisers on the site are for medical expenses, creating a tragic marketplace where the saddest stories win.
Everything—from the goal amount, to the amount raised, to the comments—are all included in the training of the model, meaning it’s starting to draw correlations between how successful any given story is. Frightening stuff in the end, really.
If this scares you like it does me, maybe we can get behind some better healthcare options in the USA.
